The Urban Compass after-school program started up again in September. The program is held every Monday through Friday at Verbum Dei High School. This year there are 50 participants in the program. Many of the students are returning from last year, and we have also welcomed some new siblings and families.
There are some exciting program updates for the 2010-2011 school year. In addition to the art program, we will now be providing piano lessons for our students three days a week. The students rotate through in pairs for 15 minutes of time to learn about music from our music teacher. All students get to explore their musical talents each week, while getting individualized instruction.
The Urban Compass Robotics and Film clubs will also be resuming this year, in partnership with Verbum Dei students and staff members. We are excited to again provide our students the opportunity to explore untapped talents, both artistic and scientific. We have seen great projects come out of these programs.
We are continually privileged to have the help of volunteers from local high schools and universities to assist in operation of the after-school program. Our volunteers help tutor the students in the after-school program and also serve as mentors. Each day we have up to 15 Verbum Dei students tutor and work with our students. We also have weekly volunteers from USC and LMU. All our volunteers develop personal relationships with our students during play time, in the classroom, and on field trips. It is magical to see how our students are so excited by their presence!
2:30-3:15 Outdoor games
3:15-3:30 Snack
3:30-4:15 Homework
4:15-5:00 Activities and art projects at stations
We follow the above schedule each day in order to maintain a structured program. When the students are finished with their homework, they are free to rotate between the stations. The stations include activities involving math, reading, arts and crafts, and games.
