Holiday Party 2010

On December 18, Urban Compass hosted the annual holiday party for our students and their families. The party was a huge success! During the party, students decorated cookies, did crafts, and even got to visit with Santa. The room was packed with parents, siblings, cousins, and friends of students, as well as volunteers from USC, LMU, Mater Dei, and other important friends of Urban Compass. After a delicious lunch provided by the Board of Directors, each student received a bag full of presents, thanks to the generosity of students from Mater Dei High School who adopted Urban Compass students. Additionally, thanks to the organizational efforts of Whitney Morgan, each family received a basket of food filled with ingredients for a holiday meal and gifts for the family. A very special thank you goes out to all those who donated time, money, and gifts to brighten the holiday season for Urban Compass families.

These four women truly embody the meaning of generosity. They have given so much of their time and energy to Urban Compass over the last year by donating supplies, teaching classes, hosting our students for events, and visiting the program. Warhol and Watts

In partnership with Pharmaka art gallery and Richard Weisman, Urban Compass held its first art 'friendraiser' on May 9th entitled 'Warhol and Watts' in downtown Los Angeles.

It was a unique event in that it showcased the Urban Compass participants' artistic talents, raised awareness about Urban Compass and Pharmaka, and brought together art, sports, and the academic world.

It was an intimate cocktail hour event with about 150 guests. All 24 pieces of the students' artwork were sold at the event.

All proceeds went to Pharmaka and Urban Compass, two non-profits dedicated to serving the Los Angeles urban community.

Read more about the event in the Los Angeles Times article and be sure to check out the photo gallery!

Easter Party 2009

Mater Dei High School throws holiday parties like you wouldn't believe. This year's Urban Compass Easter party was a huge success, thanks to the generosity and hard work of the Campus Ministry at Mater Dei High School.

The party was held in the grassy quad at Verbum Dei High School. It was the perfect spring day for an Easter party. Urban Compass participants and their families showed up ready for a day of fun and games.

Students enjoyed face painting, decorating cupcakes, an impromptu volleyball game, and best of all, a massive Easter Egg hunt around Verb's campus.

Urban Compass is grateful to the students, parents, and faculty at Mater Dei who made this party possible—and a huge success!

Annual Holiday Party 2009

Ringing in the Holidays with Urban Compass Cheer

Family and friends of Urban Compass students attended the Annual Holiday Party held at Verbum Dei High School December 19, 2009. The afternoon was filled with decorating cookies and edible Christmas trees covered with icing and sprinkles, drinking hot chocolate, decorating ornaments and playing Pin the Tail on Rudolph. The biggest surprise was a special appearance from Santa Claus! He stayed the whole afternoon taking pictures with kids and listening to what they wanted for Christmas.

Mater Dei High School students graciously donated toys for every child who attended. Director of Campus Ministry Helen Steves and about 30 seniors from Mater Dei collected toy donations and delivered them to the party. It was a joy to see the excitement on the children’s faces as they opened their presents. Skateboards, dolls, board games galore were just some of the gifts the students received.

The parents of Urban Compass students did not go home empty handed. Whitney Morgan and friends donated toiletries, baby items, groceries and clothing for families to take home.

Thank you to Mater Dei and Whitey Morgan for the donations and all your hard work to make the Holiday Party a success! The Urban Compass students and families are so grateful for your generosity.
