2010 Urban Compass Summer Camp

What a fantastic summer we've had! This July, Urban Compass hosted 30 students for a four week long summer camp filled with exciting activities for everyone. In the mornings we focused on academics, and in the afternoons took field trips all over L.A. The field trips included visits to the California Science Center (IMAX), the National History Museum, the L.A. Zoo, Ice Skating, the Aquarium, Swimming, Concerts, and Roller Skating. The kids also learned to do yoga, hip-hop dance, and went swimming and surfing. Ice skating and swimming were favorite activities among many of the kids – we couldn't get them off the rink or out of the water! During the last week at camp, we went to Mater Dei High School, where we learned dances, went swimming (again!) in an Olympic size pool, played on Moon Bounces, and enjoyed a Carnival Day.

At Urban Compass, we feel blessed to be able to offer our students a chance to create wonderful childhood memories, while also learning new skills and being challenged academically. They have had the opportunity to try many new things – yoga, skating, dance, surfing, swimming – and learn through a variety of hands-on experiences at museums, camp, the zoo, the beach, and more. This summer was filled with opportunities for students to discover their potential in a new and varied activities and settings. Best of all, everyone had fun every day!

To all those who helped make this Summer Camp possible, thank you! The smiles on our students' faces are proof, day after day, of how grateful they are for your presence, enthusiasm, and support.

We would like to extend an enormous thank you to Dave Walsh for sponsoring the summer camp!

Also, a special thank you to Vivian Suarez for reading with the kids and for sponsoring a hip hop dance class. What a special treat!

Thanks to Amber Gerhardt and Vivian Suarez for hosting us for a day of swimming – the kids had such a great time and loved learning to swim.

Thank you to Evan Fieldman and the Paul Hastings Summer Interns for coming down and letting the kids beat them in Jeopardy.

Thank you to our camp counselors, Megan Stanford, Annie Levine, Will Flores and Hunter Johnson, for their incredible dedication to Urban Compass and the kids.

We are looking forward to another excellent school year starting in September!
